High Performance Road markings materials used on surface dressing treatment

Taking advantage of the heavily textured profile of a freshly applied surface dressing treatment, we have recently installed a combination of a high performance specification road markings and road studs, to create the best possible reflective properties that are currently available in thermoplastic road markings products ranges.

We collaborated with our material supplier ‘Ennis Flint’, and used the best grade white thermoplastic of 200mcd/45srv material with a performance graded class A surface applied glass bead called ‘Ecostar 10’.

This combination has created a superior thermoplastic white road marking for both the extruded and screed applied applications to assist clients in offering practicable and affordable solutions to particular issues they may have on their network, were higher valued reflective properties are required.

The photographs below clearly demonstrate the natural undulations of the applied surface dressing treatment and how the many contours and ridges will influence the road marking characteristics to obtain a higher than normal reflective value. These near vertical faces will increase the reflective readings, compared with that of a flat asphalt surface.

These sites were also further enhanced by the use of performance road studs, which are both S1 and R1 certified. Either the Ennis ‘Stimsonite’ model C80/381 and or Roadcraft 301/290 3M embedded road studs, are recommended.

This combination of materials have been used on 3 sites in the Yorkshire region during the 2021 season. The photos attached, were taken on B6273 Moor Lane / Southmoor Road, Great Houghton, Barnsley, South Yorkshire, and the other locations are A672 Oldham Road, Saddleworth and A57 Worksop Road, South Anston.

The linear edge and centre road markings where applied by using a standard thermoplastic extrusion machine and the hand work was screeded. Both applications used the high performance graded A `Ecostar 10` glass to further enhance the initial reflective properties of the thermoplastic material.

Image 2 was taken with flash to highlight the volume of surface applied glass beads. The size of aggregate used in the surface dressing will influence the overall profile.

The surface undulations create a semi profiled effect marking that will offer a higher than normal reflective reading over that of regular smooth surfaced road marking.

Individual site assessments are needed to select the most suitable combination of materials and products to meet the clients needs and expectations.

The end result is a higher performance road marking and road stud at a reasonable cost increase, over the use of standard materials to offer practicable solutions to clients to mitigate particular incident rates they may have?
